Taking care of your woodwind instrument:

. Always keep your instrument in the case when not in use

. Avoid extreme temperatures, leaving the instrument next to a radiator or in a cold damp room, or in direct sunlight in a car and so on.

. When assembling woodwind instruments, take care to ensure the keys are not strained by rough handling. Always make sure the parts line up correctly.

. Keep your instrument clean with a DRY micro fibre / lint free cloth. It is important with woodwind instruments to dry them out after use with the correct apparatus for your particular instrument.  When using a pull-through, pass it DOWN, NOT UP so as the water lodges low and not high in the instrument.

. Always clean your mouth piece/ head joint after use.

. Keys should be wiped clean regularly. Finger marks left for a long period may well become permanent, and a smooth surface is essential to good technique.

. Corks should be greased regularly with good quality grease. If at all possible, use tallow grease as this is the best quality.

. For reed instruments, wipe your reed after use. Once you have chosen your reed type and strength, always carry a spare one.

. If you have a very good instrument that is being used frequently, it is advisable to bring it to a professional once a year to 18 months for a professional clean and service.
